ABOUT PAT MALLINGER
Pat Mallinger was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota and began playing the saxophone when he was 11. He received his Jazz Studies degree from North Texas State University on a “One O’clock Lab Band” scholarship. He lived and performed in Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, and Japan, before establishing Chicago as his home in 1990. He is a co-leader of Sabertooth which has been the mainstay band at the Green Mill Lounge each Saturday night since 1992. He is also heard around Chicago performing with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Bobby Lewis Quintet, Art Hoyle Quintet, and the Pat Mallinger Quartet, to name a few. Pat performs concerts and festivals nationally and internationally both as a band leader and a side man.
Pat is the saxophone mentor in the Ravinia Jazz Mentor Progtam founded by Ramsey Lewis. Through the Ravinia program, since it’s inception in 1994, Pat has nurtured the talents of city youth through jazz performance and clinics within Chicago Public High Schools.
He also teaches in a similar capacity as a Jazz Mentor in Chicago Public Schools with the Louis Armstrong Legacy Project and Celebration Program created by John Faddis, Columbia College, and Chicago Jazz Ensemble.
ABOUT JIM ERICKSON
Jim Erickson is a Madison,WI based composer/pianist. He holds a master’s degree in classical piano performance and bachelors in jazz piano performance, both from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Private teachers include Willie Pickens in Chicago and Kenny Barron in New York City. Jim’s compositions and recordings for advertising have won seven local Addys and two national awards, including a Telly.
He is also the leader of the popular local, “Jim Erickson Trio,” featured by: Overture After Work, Overture Gala, Isthmus Jazz Festivals and other local venues. As a sideman, Jim has been featured with Jimmy Owens and Kenny Davis in New York City and Roscoe Mitchell in Madison and Chicago.
Jim’s solo jazz piano release, “Crossroads,” is a compilation of standard material spanning several jazz generations, and original compositions by the artist.
In July, 2011, Jim participated in the Ibla Grand Prize International Music Competition held at Ragusa-Ibla, Italy. As a result of this competition, Jim was selected as a winner and toured the USA with the winner's group in April-May, 2012. Performances included New York University and Carnegie Hall, May 1, 2012. Ibla Foundation invited Jim back to NYU and Carnegie Hall, May 1 and 2, 2013 to perform his own music, and to receive a Composer's Award.
ABOUT JEFF HAMMAN
Jeff, a native of the Milwaukee area, has a long list of professional collaborations that include Eric Alexander Berkley Fudge, Penny Goodwin, Steve Allen, Randy Sabien and Kelly DeHaven. In addition to recording, Hamann has several years of experience as an instructor and clinician. In addition to his work on Whad'Ya Know? and other musical endeavors, Hamann teaches at his
alma mater, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Recent tours include Jazz Yatra in Bombay, India, International Floating Jazz Festival on the S.S. Norway, Elmhurst Jazz Festival and Indianapolis Jazz Festival. Jeff and his wife Julie are also proud of their compositions, Gianna, Aiden and Cade.
ABOUT TODD HOWELL
Todd has been a professional drummer and educator in Chicago for
over 15 years. He received his Bachelor’s in music from Northern
Illinois University. Since then he has performed with many of the city’s
top jazz artists such as Ryan Cohan, Ron Perrillo, Bobby
Broom, Scott Burns, and with internationally know jazz luminaries such
as Bob Mintzer and Brian Lynch. Additionally he has done large
ensemble work with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and most recently the
New Standard Jazz Orchestra.
He has also recorded with artists such as Fareed Haque, Juli Wood, Jeff
Morrison and guitarist Kyle Asche’s acclaimed debut recording ‘The
Hook Up’ on Origin Records.
He currently teaches at several suburban Chicagoland schools including
Elmhurst College, Lemont High School and Lisle Senior High.
